Example 1

Which number is divisible by both 3 and 4?

  1. A number divisible by both 3 and 4 must be divisible by 12.
  2. 24 is the only listed multiple of 12.
Answer: 24
Example 2

216 counters are shared equally among 8 pupils. Each pupil then gives away 4 counters. How many counters does each pupil keep?

  1. Equal sharing gives 216 ÷ 8 = 27 counters each.
  2. Giving away 4 leaves 23.
