The idea

Multi-step fraction problems require each fraction to be applied to the correct whole or remainder.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify what quantity is the whole at each step.
  2. Calculate one fraction operation at a time.
  3. Convert units or work backwards only after the fraction relationship is clear.

Example 1

A route is 10.4 km long. A walker completes 3/8 of it. How many metres is that?

  1. 10.4 km = 10,400 m.
  2. Then 3/8 of this is 3,900 m.
Answer: 3,900 m
Example 2

3/5 of a collection is 60. How many items are in the whole collection?

  1. One fifth is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.
  2. Five fifths are 20 × 5 = 100.
Answer: 100
