The idea

Short division shares a number by working through its place values from left to right.

2 · THE METHOD

Follow these steps

  1. Divide the first place value and carry any remainder to the next column.
  2. Repeat for every remaining digit.
  3. Check by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and adding any remainder.

Example 1

54 counters are shared equally between 3 bags. How many counters go in each bag?

  1. 54 ÷ 3 = 18 counters in each bag.
Answer: 18
Example 2

798 counters are shared equally among 6 classes. Each class gives away 21 counters. How many does each class keep?

  1. Share first: 798 ÷ 6 = 133.
  2. Then subtract 21, leaving 112 counters per class.
Answer: 112
